Company Sees New Applications for Its I-Portal(R) Technology for Military, Sports Medicine & Accident Care

(firmenpresse) - PITTSBURGH, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/28/13 -- Medical diagnostic device manufacturer Neuro Kinetics, Inc. (NKI) () said today that it has added five software and engineering professionals to its staff as the company continues to develop new testing protocols for diagnosis of concussions and other brain injuries.

The expansion comes as NKI recently was awarded contracts worth more than $2.5 million by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to further develop the company's I-Portal® oculomotor (eye-tracking) technology for battlefield testing of combat brain injuries.

The DoD contracts include clinical trials at Naval Hospital San Diego (Navy) and Martin Community Hospital at Ft. Benning (Army).

NKI's new hires are:

DANIEL P. SWEENEY, vice president, software and product development. Sweeney previously held management and software engineering positions with DynaVox Mayer-Johnson, a manufacturer of speech devices. Sweeney holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Yale University.

P.J. MUSICK, business analyst and inside sales manager. Musick also previously worked for DynaVox Mayer-Johnson, where she held product management and technical positions. Musick is a graduate of Kent State University.

ROBIN C. ASHMORE, senior software engineer. Ashmore holds both a doctorate in neuroscience and an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a Master's degree from West Chester University. His previous positions include biomedical research engineer and a post-doctorate fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, and software engineering for Navisys Corporation.

T. VERNON BAKER, mechanical engineer. Baker previously was an engineer at Bechtel Plant Machinery and a researcher for Harvard University's Lauder Laboratory. He presented research at the 2010 meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. A graduate of Grove City College, Baker also did additional engineering studies in Nantes, France.

LIZA P. OAKES, clinical studies coordinator. Oakes both is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University and previously held research and data management positions there.

"We are delighted to welcome our new colleagues on board," said J. Howison Schroeder, NKI president and CEO. "Each fits well with our culture and brings valuable and necessary expertise as we continue to pursue our ambitious plans for the I-Portal technology."

The I-Portal technology gauges neuro-physiologic functionality by measuring the eye's reflex to a variety of oculomotor stimuli taxing different parts of the brain. NKI's research data shows that I-Portal can detect abnormalities caused by various forms of brain injuries, including often hard-to-detect mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBI), also known as concussions.

Note: This work is supported by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command under Contract No. W81XWH-13-C-0008.
