Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has taken into service a new berth
for mega-containerships by handling the 'CMA CGM Christophe Colomb' there.
With a slot capacity of 13,800 TEU, the French shipping company CMA CGM's
new flagship is the largest containership ever to call in the Port of
Hamburg.

For Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), the first call by the 'CMA CGM
Christophe Colomb' represents a milestone towards efficient handling of the
world's largest containerships during the next few years. With a slot
capacity of 13,800 TEU, the ship berthed at HHLA Container Terminal
Burchardkai (CTB) on Tuesday evening and after being cleared will probably
leave the Port of Hamburg on Wednesday night.

To be capable of bringing maximum productivity to handling ships of this
size, in recent months HHLA has equipped a berth at CTB with five
Super-Post-Panamax gantry cranes. These consist of tandem cranes that in
one move can shift two 40-ft or four 20-ft (TEU) containers. These
container gantry cranes are the largest and most productive of their kind
anywhere in Europe. CTB now has ten Super-Post-Panamax gantry cranes
available for handling mega-containerships.

Dr. Stefan Behn, HHLA Executive Board member for the Container segment: 'In
continuing investments in our facilities, we have systematically prepared
for handling mega-containerships of the latest generation. With our
Super-Post-Panamax gantry cranes, we are not just in a position to handle
the world's largest containerships. The improved performance also enables

us to offer higher productivity. This is a milestone for HHLA.'

Reinhard Peschel, Managing Director of CMA CGM Deutschland: 'CMA CGM has
deliberately decided to come to Hamburg with vessels such as the 'CMA CGM
Christophe Colomb' because here we not only find an excellent existing
hinterland link with Central and Eastern Europe but can also very easily
combine transshipment cargo for the Scandinavian and Baltic region. We are
also highly satisfied with the productivity of Hamburg's container
terminals and our long-running mutual cooperation.'

In taking into service the new mega-containership berth at CTB, HHLA has
secured the necessary conditions for handling the world's largest
containerships in Hamburg. Under the present draft and width restrictions
on the Elbe, however, mega-containerships of the latest generation, with a
capacity of 13,500 TEU and upwards, can only call at Hamburg when loaded up
to approximately 85 percent of capacity - and even this only during a
limited time window. 'We regard the first call by the 'CMA CGM Christophe
Colomb' as an advance expression of our customer's conviction that the Elbe
navigation channel will soon be deepened. Shipping companies like CMA CGM,
which are putting more and more mega-containerships into service, want to
come to Hamburg with their cargo, and this without any restrictions,' said
HHLA Executive Board member Dr. Stefan Behn.

'It is essential that our ships can enjoy the utmost possible flexibility
in calling at the Port of Hamburg. We are constantly emphasizing this to
the authorities locally and are convinced that the right decisions will be
taken for forging ahead with the deepening of the Elbe navigation channel
as rapidly as possible,' commented Reinhard Peschel, head of CMA CGM in
Germany.

HHLA has just been selected to handle a joint Asia-Europe liner service for
shipowners CMA CGM and Maersk. Operated by 13,500-TEU mega-containerships
and known as the FAL 5 Service, this will probably commence in August -
with the 'CMA CGM Christophe Colomb' as one of the ships deployed. 'For us,
acquisition of the FAL 5 Service is a success that underlines the
imperative need for deepening of the Elbe navigation channel,' added Dr.
Behn of HHLA's Executive Board.
