Deadline Nearing for Murray Wise Foundation Ag Scholarships
(firmenpresse) - CHAMPAIGN, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 03/19/13 -- Time is growing short for agriculture students to apply for scholarships through the . The deadline for applications is March 31.
Eligible applicants include high school seniors accepted for enrollment at an accredited college, university or community college in a course of study related to agriculture. Awards are for a minimum of $1,000 and may be renewed yearly for up to four years, provided certain conditions are met. Recipients are selected based on financial need and academic credentials, including class rank, grade point average and test scores.
"Almost every day, I read articles questioning whether a college education today justifies its high costs, especially with many graduates struggling to pay off large student loans. But I don't hear that complaint so much among those with agriculture degrees, because there is always a demand," said Wise.
In fact, a recent study from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce found that recent graduates with an agriculture degree do exceptionally well in the job force.
"Georgetown found that only 7 percent of those with an ag degree were unemployed, compared to 13.9 percent of those with a degree in architecture, 8.9 percent of those in social science, and 11.1 percent of those in the arts," said Murray Wise, chairman and CEO of Murray Wise Associates.
Among experienced graduates, those in agriculture have only a 3.5 percent unemployment level -- lower than any field except health.
