CSPC Acknowledges Investments Announced in the 2013 Federal Budget

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/21/13 -- The Canadian Science Policy Centre (CSPC) acknowledges the investments announced in the 2013 federal budget in science, technology and innovation. We are pleased to note that the government has recognized the important role science plays in the Canadian economy.

CSPC was formed to promote science in policy in Canada. We believe in the need to foster a strong science policy culture in Canada, shaped by a co-evolution of science and policy goals shared between community members.

Research and development in the Canadian science and technology field is increasingly interdisciplinary and technology is changing the way policies need to be delivered and gaps addressed.

The government has clearly indicated a strong preference for partnerships in our field. "For our part, we agree that for Canada to improve commercialization outcomes of R&D we must work across borders and between the private sector, academia and governments," said Mehrdad Hariri, President of the CSPC.

In particular we welcome the $37 million in new funding for the Granting Councils, as well as additional new funding for Genome Canada.

We also note that the 2013 Federal Budget reiterates its recognition that federally sponsored research undertaken at post-secondary institutions entails associated indirect costs and that an examination of the Indirect Costs Program will be undertaken in the coming year.

It is fitting that the fifth annual CSPC conference will focus on "ScienceNext: Incubating innovation and ingenuity". Taking place in Toronto November 20-22, CSPC is expecting more than 600 leaders of science and technology to attend.
