In Response to Recent TED Talks Regarding Education, The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani Has Issued a Press Statement Highlighting the Importance of Student Empowerment

(firmenpresse) - SULAIMANI, IRAQ -- (Marketwired) -- 04/02/13 -- (AUIS) naturally has an interest in the state of the global educational industry, as it provides an American-style academic experience to its students while preparing them to thrive as professionals on the international stage. As such, the organization has recently responded to an published by the Huffington Post that highlights the educational ideas asserted during the 2013 TED Conference in Long Beach, California. Here, AUIS provides a press statement that encourages the importance of student empowerment and spotlights the manner in which it is striving to provide each student with the education they need to thrive in their chosen profession.

According to the article, "At this year's TED Conference in Long Beach [sic] California -- the answers to the education question were very much on the table, even as the solutions proposed seemed in some ways to be at odds with one another.

"Six TED Talks orbited around education -- providing a powerful glimpse into the complexity and opportunity that lies ahead."

The article describes the talks given by Freeman Hrabowski, Richard Turere, Taylor Wilson, Miranda Want and Jeanny Yao, Jack Andraka, and Sugata Mitra, whose initiative won him the TED Prize. The article explains that Mitra put his theory of a self-organized learning environment, or S.O.L.E., into action by putting a computer into a slum in New Delhi. After the computer was installed, the children in the area began to teach themselves using the computer's resources.

"We need to look at learning as the product of educational self-organization," Mitra comments. "If you allow the educational program to self-organize, then learning emerges. It's not about making learning happen; it's about letting it happen."

"Student empowerment is a priority for the faculty and administration at AUIS," comments The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani in a recent press statement. "Through our vigorous, American-style education and active student services and organizations, we hope to encourage students to become critical thinkers and provide the country with a promising next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs."

The professionals at AUIS encourage students who are interested in gaining an education to explore their available resources and take advantage of the opportunities that are open to them.
