Asda Money Looks at Switching Options as New Winter Energy Tariffs Kick-in

Campaigners warn that the above inflation rises could send the number of households in fuel poverty - defined as spending more than 10% of income on energy - soaring from a figure of 6 million to 9.1 million(2).

Securing the best tariff

However, in general consumers could stand to make savings by opting for a dual fuel plan, as opposed to a gas-only or electricity-only plan, as well opting to make payments by direct debit. It is also important to ensure that the price quoted includes VAT, which is charged at 5%(4) on gas and electricity bills.

Energy suppliers are constantly coming up with new tariffs in an effort to attract customers so comparing the market every nine to 12 months will help to ensure you can take advantage of the best deals at any given time.
