(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 04/11/13 -- As part of BMO Harris Bank's ongoing commitment to financial literacy and Making Money Make Sense, BMO Harris is providing weekly financial tips. This week's tip offers ways to save money on clothing.

As the temperature climbs and the leaves change color, it's time to trade in your coats and sweaters for shorts and sandals. A shopping trip may be in order, but it's important to go in with a plan so you can get the most for your hard-earned dollars.

You can dress stylishly while still staying within your budget. It's often just a matter of planning ahead and knowing when you should spend and when you should save.

Most people know you should shop sales when possible and look for coupons in the newspaper and online. Here are some other ways you may be able to cut costs:

Before shopping, take stock of what you already have in your closet. Then, create a list of items you need, preferably ones that will easily mix and match with pieces you already have. Using a list helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed and keeps you focused on what you're there to buy so you're less tempted by extras.

It's not uncommon for stores to offer special discounts for regular customers. To find out about these deals, sign up to receive emails and online newsletters from your favorite retailers. Also, consider connecting via social media to get up-to-the-minute specials.

Outlet, discount, vintage and consignment stores offer clothing items that are often much less expensive than those in traditional retail shops. As a bonus, you may end up finding one-of-a-kind pieces that you won't see on anyone else.

Clothing items hiding in the back of your closet are just taking up precious space. But instead of throwing them away, consider inviting your friends over for a clothing swap. Ask guests to bring clothing that is the wrong size, not their style or anything they're tired of wearing. Everyone might end up with something "new," and the items no one wants can be donated to charity.

Beware -- going with the cheapest item is not always the best way to save money. It's better to consider cost per wear. For example, an inexpensive fake leather handbag may cost less, but might not stand the test of time. A well-constructed bag is likely to hold up year after year and may actually end up costing less in the long run because of the use you get from it.
