Three Generations Make Summer Camp the Quintessential Family-Owned Business Success Story

Camp Caribou is an example of a successful New England family-owned business. The third generation continues to build its enduring legacy, having grown from 90 campers in the 1960s to nearly 250 campers today.
Al and Evelyn Lerman purchased Camp Caribou in 1968. Today, their son Bill and his wife Martha are owners and operators. Their elder son Bobby and daughter Lori along with her husband Alex Rotman are Assistant Directors. Younger son Jerry serves as Assistant Program Director.

New England summer camps have undergone many changes during the Lerman's 45-year tenure. In the 1970s there were more than 400 Maine camps. Today fewer than half remain. Multi-camp corporations and national non-profits have acquired many independently owned camps. Meanwhile, Camp Caribou has endured and grown to include campers from around the US and world.

1922: Camp Winslow founded.
1940: Camp Winslow renamed Camp Caribou.
1968: "Big Al" and Ev Lerman purchase the camp.
1983: Bill and Martha Lerman take the reins as co-directors.
2007: Daughter Lori and husband Alex Rotman become assistant directors.
2012: Son Bobby joins as assistant director.
2013: Son Jerry becomes assistant program director.
Camp Caribou () is a residential summer camp for boys ages 7-16, located in Winslow, Maine. Owned by the Lerman family since 1968, the traditional camp is on a 200-acre peninsula with 1.5 miles of lakefront. The program teaches the enjoyment of land and water sports, nature activities, and creative arts, in a loving, family environment. Facilities include a large lake with dock, a 10,000 square foot gym, cardiovascular and weight rooms, and theatre. The Lerman family's hands-on leadership is based on the belief that camp should feel like home away from home.
