Plastic transmission crossbeam impresses SPE jury - BMW uses component in BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 550i and 750i - ContiTech expands expertise in lightweight construction

(PresseBox) - Lightweight components from ContiTech Vibration Control have received another prize. The transmission crossbeam made of fiber-glass reinforced polyamide, which BMW uses in its 5 Series Gran Turismo 550i and in the 750i as standard, was one of the top 5 in the Power Train category of the SPE Central Europe Automotive Award. The component already ranked first last year in the Industry category of the innovation prize conferred by the Federation of Reinforced Plastics (AVK).
By using plastic, it was possible to cut the weight by 50% compared to aluminum. "ContiTech has extensive know-how in using plastics for lightweight components in vehicles. This is also reflected by the latest award," says Kai Uwe Frühauf, who is in charge of the ContiTech Vibration Control business. "Plastic is the key to success when it comes to lightweight construction. And that is why we will continue to intensify our involvement in this area."
The transmission crossbeam with integrated transmission mounts is the direct link between the engine-transmission unit and the chassis. The ultra-strong structural component adds to the overall rigidity of the vehicle and shores up the forces and torque of the engine-transmission unit. ContiTech produces the component in an injection molding process. In addition to weight reduction, development focused on optimum vehicle acoustics and crash safety. Elaborate testing shows that these two targets have been met. What's more, developers managed to ideally adapt the component to the available clearance. The plastic transmission crossbeam likewise fully satisfies the high temperature requirements resulting from its proximity to the exhaust system. With still another advantage, that of improved recyclability, ContiTech ensures this product, too, adheres to the sustainability idea.
The Internationale Gesellschaft für Kunststofftechnik e.V. and the Society of Plastic Engineers conferred the SPE Award for the 13th time.
