Misunderstanding cultural identity makes strategy fail.

Misunderstanding cultural identity makes strategy fail.

Sometimes the baton falls on the last meters before the finish line. This is particularly maddening when being perfectly prepared, best in form and in lead of the race.

In the business world analogous situations are often observed when apparently well prepared companies pursue a strategy of international expansion and embark to new countries or international teams work on joint projects. Lack of understanding cultural preferences often leads to confusion because certain behaviors are misinterpreted.

Neuss / Haarlem - June 2013. orange & green water GmbH and CMC Culture & Management Consulting combine their strengths to create added value.

Thus, the partner network gains one more complementary pillar around strategic marketing planning and strategic management. The span of topics among future knowledge, insight discovery, innovative skills and strategic planning software is now complemented by cross-cultural cooperation.

Culture is often perceived as a fluffy topic which cannot be measured and thus is not ‘real’ in the eyes of strategic decision makers. Yet, in mergers and acquisitions, cross-cultural alliances and general global teamwork, research (and practical experience) indicate that culture does play a crucial part in making or breaking the deal.

In any type of cooperation, we tend to judge ourselves on our intentions (not behaviours), and others on their behaviours (not intentions). In cross-cultural cooperations, these intentions are even more invisible to us. We tend to negatively judge differing styles of management, teamwork or communication as negative, a nuisance that needs to be dealt with through ‘change’ management so we can all behave ‘normal’. Yet what is normal is just an interpretation depending on our own cultural context, and our normal behavior might be very efficient at home, but very ineffective abroad.

Cross-cultural cooperation holds the potential for innovation, yet this does not emerge automatically. It takes cultural intelligence, self-awareness, an appreciative attitude, creative perception, the ability to postpone judgement, the ability to distinguish polarities from problems, the art of reconciliation.

CMC works with a pragmatic culture model, the Model of Freedom, that makes these different perceptions visible. It provides a language to discuss differences from an objective perspective and takes an appreciative approach. Different preferences can thus become an added value, global teams can become high performance teams and cross-cultural strategic alliances can use the different perspectives to deal with their different environments, clients, stakeholders and employees from more than one perspective. If you really want to have ‘all noses pointed in the same direction’, you better wish that all threats and opportunities come from one direction too. Having different noses increases innovation, creativity and offers a broader view on potential threats and opportunities. And it makes the world a more interesting place.
