Kerr & Wagstaffe Offers Homeowner's Insurance Tips for Those Living in Disaster Areas

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/10/13 -- With hurricane season underway and tornado sightings increasingly common in middle America, homeowners who live in disaster zones are growing more and more concerned about whether their insurance coverage is up to snuff -- and the legal professionals at Kerr & Wagstaffe contend that these concerns are legitimate. A recent Fox News report likewise, noting that there are some basic steps that homeowners can take to make sure they are prepared for natural disasters. has issued a new statement to the press, commenting on these timely issues.

"How well does your homeowner's policy protect you and your family against the damage done by winds, by floods, and by earthquakes?" asks Kerr & Wagstaffe, in the firm's new press statement. "The answer may surprise you. Many homeowners are not entirely clear on what kind of coverage their policies offer, and for those living in disaster-prone regions, this level of uncertainty can be devastating."

Fox News makes similar contentions. "One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is assuming their insurance will cover them in the event of a disaster," the article states. Unfortunately, basic homeowner's insurance plans do not cover against any and all natural disasters. Traditional plans do not often cover against flooding, though separate coverage can be obtained from insurance providers. In addition, those who live in areas prone to flooding or to earthquakes will likely need to purchase separate policies to protect themselves against these natural disasters.

Fox News also encourages those who live in disaster-prone areas to stay alert, and to keep their ears open for early warnings about pending disasters. One way to do so is with an NOAA radio. "These radios are constantly tuned to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's weather alert frequency, causing them to sound an alarm when a natural disaster occurs in your area, which means you don't have to be glued to the Weather Channel to be warned of oncoming danger," reports Fox.

Homeowners who make it through intense storms or floods without any property damage may still face issues, the article continues -- in particular, a lack of electrical power. It is important for homeowners to be prepared for all contingencies, and to stock up on some extra food, bottled water, flashlights, and batteries.

Finally, the article advises homeowners to protect themselves against natural disasters by making appropriate upgrades to their homes, such as the installation of FEMA-approved storm doors.

"All of these tips are prudent ones, but we especially advise homeowners to know what their rights are as policyholders," concludes Kerr & Wagstaffe. "If you are unsure of what your coverage entails, speak with your insurance agent or an attorney as soon as possible."
