Continuuity Simplifies Application Development on YARN, Releases Weave to the Apache Hadoop Community
Join Continuuity for a Discussion at HBaseCon in San Francisco on June 13

(firmenpresse) - PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/11/13 -- Continuuity, the industry's first scale-out application server for Apache Hadoop, today announced the release of Weave, a new open source project that enables Java developers to rapidly build scalable, distributed applications on YARN, the next generation processing framework for Apache Hadoop. Weave makes developing Java-based YARN applications as simple as running threads on a local Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Weave also provides Java developers using YARN with increased usability and functionality, broadening the set of applications and patterns that YARN can support.
Weave is available NOW on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 License at: .
"We developed Apache Hadoop YARN to support a wide set of use cases in a generic manner, and it is very important to make it easy for developers to exploit the features and capabilities of YARN. We are excited to see the new types of applications that can be built on YARN using Weave," said Arun Murthy, co-founder of Hortonworks. "We are thrilled that Continuuity has decided to help make YARN even easier to use, and that they are sharing their efforts with the community."
Weave is a framework that facilitates the writing of distributed applications and offers a simple set of interfaces that allow developers to manage resources, nodes and jobs in these apps through an abstraction layer built on YARN. This abstraction makes building, debugging and running YARN applications easier and significantly improves and simplifies the developer experience.
"Continuuity's mission is to make building Big Data applications easier for developers. With the release of Weave, we're supporting an increasingly diverse set of real-time application patterns to spur innovation in the Hadoop ecosystem," said Jonathan Gray, CTO and co-founder of Continuuity. "Our goal is to continue collaborating with the community and improving Weave and YARN."
Weave provides YARN users with standard support for application lifecycle management, communication between containers and the Application Master, and handling application level errors. Additional features include:
Simplified API for specifying, running and managing applications built on YARN
Simplified approach to specifying and managing the stages of the application lifecycle
Generic Application Master to better support simple applications
Log and metrics aggregation for applications
Simplified archive management
Improved control over application logs, metrics and errors
Discovery service
Continuuity's Jonathan Gray will be a featured speaker on the panel "Apache HBase Futures" at HBaseCon on June 13, 2013. HBaseCon is the premier conference for the Apache HBase community and brings together developers, contributors, users and administrators. Continuuity's Andreas Neumann and Alex Baranau will be also speaking on the topic of "High-Throughput, Transactional Stream Processing on Apache HBase."
