Battery Collection Program Encouraged by Proposed Ontario Waste Reduction Act

Battery Collection Program Encouraged by Proposed Ontario Waste Reduction Act

ID: 269070

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/12/13 -- Call2Recycle® Canada, the country's first and largest consumer battery stewardship program, supports the proposed Waste Reduction Act and Waste Reduction Strategy recently announced by Ontario Environment Minister, Jim Bradley. This proposed policy would create a more open market, allowing organizations like Call2Recycle to build on their successful track record as an established, nationally-recognized battery collection program.

If passed, the Waste Reduction Act would place greater emphasis on individual companies to manage the end of life disposal of their products, making producers of products, expanded beyond single-use batteries to include rechargeable batteries, to be responsible for waste reduction outcomes. Additionally, the Act will give individual producers the opportunity to select how they will meet their provincially-mandated waste diversion requirements, whether individually or through a product stewardship program, like Call2Recycle. Currently serving as the product stewardship solution to over 200 product and battery manufacturers, Call2Recycle is pleased to see new legislation introduced that supports its current free-market program model.

"We believe Minister Bradley has taken a positive step in the right direction to further waste diversion in Ontario," says Joe Zenobio, Executive Director, Call2Recycle Canada. "And, we look forward to working with the Ministry on setting achievable and clear standards, and implementing strategies to divert even more batteries from the province."

Founded in 1994, Call2Recycle -- North America's first and largest consumer battery stewardship program -- is a non-profit organization that collects and recycles batteries at no cost for municipalities, businesses and consumers. Since 1996, Call2Recycle has diverted over 34 million kilograms of batteries and cellphones from the solid waste stream and established 30,000 collection sites throughout Canada and the U.S. It is the first program of its kind to receive the Responsible Recycling Practices Standard (R2) certification.
