(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/14/13 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present the Michener Awards for meritorious public service in journalism, as well as the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism, the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education, and the Michener-Baxter Special Award, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at 6 p.m., during a ceremony at Rideau Hall.

The six finalists for the 2012 Michener Awards are:

This year's Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism will be awarded to photojournalist Roger LeMoyne, who will investigate, in words and photos, the environmental and civic behaviour of Canadian mining companies in foreign lands.

The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education will be awarded to Julie Ireton, a business reporter with CBC Ottawa. Ms. Ireton will develop a workshop on entrepreneurial journalism to assist students in schools of journalism across Canada to market their skills. The project will eventually link Carleton University's Sprott School of Business and its School of Journalism and Communication.

During this ceremony, the Michener Awards Foundation will also honour Bryan Cantley for his commitment and outstanding service to Canadian journalism and the newspaper industry by presenting him with the Michener-Baxter Special Award.

The Michener Awards Foundation honours, celebrates and promotes excellence in Canadian public service journalism. The Michener Award for meritorious public service in journalism was launched in 1970, under the auspices of the late Right Honourable Roland Michener, governor general from 1967 to 1974. The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism encourages excellence in investigative print, broadcast and online journalism, while the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education is dedicated to the advancement of the education of Canadian journalists.
