Wounded Warrior Project(R) Spreading Awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

(firmenpresse) - JACKSONVILLE, FL -- (Marketwired) -- 06/17/13 -- In recognition of June as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month, (WWP) conducted a satellite media tour to help spread awareness and messages of hope and encouragement for people who may be dealing with PTSD. The June 6th tour was conducted in Los Angeles and reached viewers throughout the U.S.

The tour featured Rick Allen, drummer for the popular rock band Def Leppard, who lost his left arm in a serious auto accident. The tour also featured former Marine John Roberts who was severely injured while serving in Somalia when the rear engine on his helicopter blew out at 200 feet in the air and then crashed into the ocean. Four marines in flight with John were killed, and John sustained burns over 80% of his body. Drawn together by their shared experience with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Allen and Roberts are reaching out and breaking down PTSD's barriers.

Allen and Roberts are sharing their message that PTSD is a normal reaction to a traumatic situation and can happen to anyone, including civilians and members of the military. During the tour they talked about their experiences with PTSD and shared stories about its destructive nature of anger, isolation and self-medication. They also discussed how they mentor each other as well as act as peer mentors for other warriors who suffer with PTSD by opening up and sharing their stories of trauma, courage and strength. Together they host "Warrior Gatherings" backstage at Def Leppard concerts where they share the good and the bad ways that they have dealt with their PTSD over the years.

Viewers who want more information on PTSD or to get assistance are urged to visit website.
