Minister Oliver Announces New Chair of the Board of Directors of Sustainable Development Technology Canada
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/25/13 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today announced the appointment of James Laurence Balsillie as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). Mr. Balsillie will serve as Chair on a part-time basis for a term of five years.
"Mr. Balsillie's extensive accomplishments as an entrepreneur and innovator mean he will be a superb contributor to the development of innovative energy and environmental technology solutions," said Minister Oliver.
"I am honoured to accept the role of Chair of SDTC's Board of Directors," said Mr. Balsillie. "SDTC plays an important role in supporting innovative clean technologies, and I look forward to continuing the great work that is being achieved through this organization and offering my experience in commercializing new technologies and growing them globally."
Mr. Balsillie has over 20 years of experience at the senior executive level. He is the co-founder and former co-CEO of Research in Motion (BlackBerry), and the founder and current Chair of the Centre for International Governance Innovation.
SDTC is an arm's-length foundation created by the Government of Canada in 2001 to support projects that develop and demonstrate new technologies to promote sustainable development. SDTC's work is an important part of the Government's commitment to create high-quality jobs for Canadians and promote innovation in Canada's economy.
"As the global economy becomes more competitive, Canada must continue to nurture the highly skilled individuals and new ideas that will help our businesses innovate, secure new markets and create well-paying jobs," said Minister Oliver. "By supporting advanced research and technology, the government is choosing to invest in the current and future prosperity of Canadians and a cleaner environment."
Under Economic Action Plan 2013, the Harper Government is allocating $325 million over eight years to SDTC to continue support for the development and demonstration of new, clean technologies.
