Star94 and 790TheZone Join Forces With ALS Association Georgia Chapter to Fight Lou Gehrig's Disease

(firmenpresse) - ATLANTA, GA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/23/13 -- The ALS Association Georgia Chapter today announced a partnership with WSTR/Star 94 and WQXI/790 The Zone to serve as the presenting sponsor of the annual Walk to Defeat ALS® in Atlanta. Cindy Simmons and Jimmy Alexander of the WSTR/Star 94 morning show will champion the station's efforts as they set out to help raise funds and awareness for patients and their families living with ALS in Georgia.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs the body of the ability to walk, speak, swallow and eventually breathe. Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS and, once diagnosed, patients typically live only two to five years. Approximately 500 Georgians are currently fighting ALS, at an average cost of more than $200,000 a year. Currently, there is no known cause of ALS or cure.
Nationally, the Walk to Defeat ALS® raises funds to sustain patient care and support ALS research. This year, 170 walks will be held across the country. Since 2000, the events have raised more than $137 million to support the vision of The ALS Association -- to create a world without ALS. Locally, The ALS Association Georgia Chapter is in its 11th year and has raised over $1.5 million in support of Georgia patients and families affected by this horrible disease. The Walk empowers people with ALS, their families, friends, and the business community to fight back against a disease that leaves many feeling powerless.
"We are honored to sponsor this year's Walk to Defeat ALS," said Rick Mack, Senior Vice President and General Manager of WSTR and WQXI. "Star 94 and 790 The Zone have long supported the community. Both stations are pleased to continue raising awareness of and supporting such an important issue."
"We are thrilled to partner with WSTR/Star 94 and WQXI/790 The Zone on this year's Atlanta Walk to Defeat ALS®," said Liza Nordmark, Corporate Partnership Manager for The ALS Association Georgia Chapter. "The funds and awareness generated through this partnership will have a tremendous impact on our organization and the patients and families we serve."
