Statement From LIVESTRONG Foundation President and CEO Doug Ulman

(firmenpresse) - AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwired) -- 07/25/13 -- Today, the issued the following statement from its President and CEO regarding the United Nations' decision to establish a task force on the prevention and control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
"The LIVE Foundation applauds the United Nations for creating the UN Interagency Task Force on Prevention and Control of NCDs. With co-sponsorship from 110 Member States, this action paves the way for a global effort to address the serious and growing toll that cancer and other NCDs are taking on families and communities globally.
"The decision to create the task force dovetails with the Foundation's core mission of delivering hope and help to people who are facing cancer now, regardless of their location or situation. Over the last five years, we have played a leading role in pushing for a greater global focus on countering cancer and other NCDs in developing countries, through a series of activities:
In response to the Foundation's 18-month research delivered in 2007 and revealing widespread misconceptions, stigma and lack of awareness associated with cancer, at the September 2008 Clinton Global Initiative it announced a commitment to make cancer a global priority, and established the LIVE Global Cancer Campaign to urgently address the burden of cancer worldwide and support the 28 million people living with cancer around the globe.
In 2009, the Foundation convened the LIVE Global Cancer Summit in Ireland. More than 350 commitments were made from nearly 70 countries around the world, directly impacting the lives of five million people and ultimately, reaching more than 240 million people. In addition, these commitments resulted in an investment of more than $200 million in the fight against cancer in the first year alone.
Since then, the Foundation has joined with other global leaders fighting for this cause. In September, 2011 the Foundation addressed NCDs at the and highlighted its report, , that recommends practical, effective and affordable strategies to address cancer prevention and treatment needs for countries at all stages of economic development.
The Foundation also participated in a variety of events for the world's cancer survivors during the , underscoring its commitment to making cancer a global priority.
Recently, the Foundation advocated with other organizations for a to address NCDs in countries worldwide.
"We applaud the last five years of progress on NCDs and cancer control, but we know there is still more work to do to fight for access to care and stronger health systems. Cancer and other NCDs kill more than 36 million people each year around the globe and it will take strong collaboration between the new task force, civil society, the private sector and global citizens to address this challenge. We have seen this type of coalition drive major progress on NCDs in the U.S., and we strongly believe that global progress is possible. We look forward to playing our part."
