Five Hole for Food Collects More Than 345,000 Pounds of Food
Coast-to-coast tour visited 13 Canadian cities to benefit community food banks

(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/28/13 -- When Five Hole for Food (FHFF) founder Richard Loat hit the road earlier this month, the goal was to travel across Canada and collect the equivalent of 250,000 pounds of food for community food banks.
The tour ended last weekend in Vancouver and preliminary numbers show FHFF exceeded its goals. Thanks to Canadians who came out in 13 cities where FHFF hosted drop-in street-hockey games, plus corporate partners, the total collected is approximately 345,000 pounds of food.
"The generosity of people from Newfoundland to British Columbia never ceases to amaze me," says Loat. "We saw incredible support from coast to coast and I know our food bank partners are grateful for the help this time of the year.
"So many people contributed to our success this year. Thank you to everyone who came out to our events, dropped food off in our collection boxes, or bought a T-shirt. I promise that 2014, when we celebrate our fifth anniversary, will be bigger and better."
FHFF started its road trip July 3 in St. John's, N.L., and finished in Vancouver, B.C. on July 20. Loat and his road crew, which included members from ING Direct, travelled more than 11,000 kilometres. They set up drop-in games in 13 cities and encouraged the public to come by with a food or cash donation plus a hockey stick.
All donations collected in each city remained with FHFF's food bank partner in that community.
"You can't help but smile when you hear the words Five Hole for Food," says Aart Schuurman Hess, CEO, Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.
"The summer months are often the most challenging - for families as well as food banks. Seeing the entire community come together while also having a significant impact on the level of need during that critical time is extremely inspiring."
This year's sponsors are: ING Direct, TELUS, London Drugs, Nature's Path, 7-Eleven, The National Hockey League Players' Association Goals & Dreams Fund, Dan-D-Pak, Canadian Pacific, Marketwired and Boston Pizza.
