During the webinar, Decor&You will expand on the following six areas:
1. Is there a painting you adore, a specific color, or a piece of furniture that you want to see in your dream space? Start with one key item or aspect in your room that you are obsessed with and build the rest of the space around it, making it fit in with the rest of the décor.
2. An ideal space needs to have good flow and be both comfortable and functional. Make sure the entrance(s) into the room are open and clear of clunky furniture. Any furniture in the room should be arranged to complement each of the room's focal points, such as a fireplace or chandelier. Plot out a few scenarios on graph paper to help find the best layout.
3. Color is the foundation for all things design and the most economical ingredient in any décor. It sets the mood for a room by adding energy to a dull space or creating a relaxed, calm environment in a hectic one. When picking a wall color, it is important to consider the size of your room. If the room is large, paint it a bright, warm color to bring in the walls. If the room is small, paint it a cooler color to give the illusion of a larger space.
4. Have you ever been in a dimly lit room? How did it make you feel? When designing lighting for a room, the main thing to consider is what activities are intended for the space. This will influence your choice of fixtures and where they are placed. Also, think beyond simply adding a lamp or ceiling fixture to a room and consider alternate ways to bring light into an area.
5. Adding at least one item or element in a room with glitter or a sparkle to it makes a nice added focal point within the space. Think creatively -- perhaps use a glitter grout for tiling on the wall/floor or find unique wall décor that adds a sparkly glow to the area.
6. The first five steps focus on sight, but don't forget to consider the other four senses -- smell, sound, touch and taste -- when decorating. Potpourri and candles are a great way to add a scent to a space. Keep music playing on a low volume from a CD, iPod, TV, or sound machine to set the mood. Adding a plush area rug or soft throw is an easy way to bring the sense of "touch" into the room. And, don't forget about food -- a small, decorative bowl of chocolates, candy or even fruit are a great final touch.
