Manitoba Metis Federation Announces Land Claims Strategic Investment Committee

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/31/13 -- In the months following a victorious landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada regarding a decades-long land claim case, President David Chartrand of the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) has put together a group of top Canadian business leaders to advise the MMF on all future business and development opportunities in anticipation of the settlement of those claims. The group will advise the MMF on how best to construct a Legacy Fund which will support the aspirations of the Metis people for generations to come.
"It is with great pride that I announce the membership of the Land Claims Strategic Investment Committee - the Right Honourable Paul Martin, Mr. Hartley Richardson, Mr. Sanford Riley, Mr. Harvey Secter and Dr. Eric Newell," said President Chartrand. "I have had longstanding relationships with these individuals and they are great friends of the Metis people."
Mr. Martin, a Canadian businessman and politician, has decades of experience beginning first in the global shipping industry. After joining public office as a Member of Parliament, he later served as the Minister of Finance from 1993-2002 and then as the 21st Prime Minister of Canada from 2003 to 2006. Since leaving public office, he has served as an advisor to the International Monetary Fund and founded the Martin Aboriginal Educational Initiative which assists Indigenous Canadian youth. Mr. Richardson is President and CEO of James Richardson & Sons, Limited - a privately owned family business involved in agriculture and food processing, oil and gas exploration, financial services and real estate investments.
Mr. Sanford Riley, serves as President and CEO of Richardson Financial Group Limited and as the Chairman of the University of Winnipeg Foundation. He is also a member of several boards of directors and active within the Manitoba community. Mr. Harvey Secter is an arbitrator and mediator who was named Chancellor of the University of Manitoba after serving for ten years as a professor and Dean of Law. He continues to practice dispute resolution and is a current member of the Premier's Economic Advisory Council. Dr. Eric Newell is a retired Alberta business executive with a strong history of corporate leadership and achievement, with an exemplary record of service to industry and community.
"The Metis place great value on education for their youth and any economic investment must ensure that continued opportunity for its younger generations," said Mr. Martin. "I am delighted that the MMF has placed the focus of this legacy initiative on building the health, education, and economic opportunities for the future generations of the Metis people.
"The recent Supreme Court decision made it clear that with respect to the Manitoba Act of 1870, Canada's government of the day did not act in good faith with respect to the Metis people. This was to the detriment of the Metis-but now is the time to put the past behind us as we focus on future investment opportunities for young Metis people. This is an important issue for all Manitobans and we are pleased to play our part in helping Canada and the Metis move forward," added Mr. Richardson.
The MMF land claims case was initiated by the leadership of the Federation in 1981, and dates back to 1870, where the Government of Canada first negotiated with Louis Riel and the Metis Nation at the Red River Settlement. In March of 2013, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled these agreements were not honoured by the federal government.
President Chartrand has since met with numerous officials and will continue to encourage formalized negotiations with the Government of Canada.
