(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/31/13 -- Today Canada Safeway launched its annual month-long fundraising and awareness campaign in support of children, youth and adults affected by neuromuscular disorders. For the sixth consecutive year Canada Safeway continues its commitment to raise much needed funds for research and to support equipment needs through the "Safeway Mobility Grants" program.

Keith Knight received the Safeway Mobility Grant for power wheelchair modifications in 2011, and in 2012 Keith was among the first scholarship recipients of the Safeway Moving Muscles Scholarship program for people who have a neuromuscular disorder. The scholarships help each recipient pursue post secondary education or training.

"The Canada Safeway grant has pretty much enabled me to help others. Right now I'm using my education and my time to help raise awareness for people with disabilities and Muscular Dystrophy globally by using some of the techniques I've learned from my schooling," said Keith. "Honestly, it just helps me fulfill my goals and dreams. It's been very important for me to receive the Safeway grant. I'd just like to say my thanks and accentuate the importance of it," continued Keith.

"Canada Safeway continues its commitment to raise much needed funds for research and to provide equipment through the Safeway Mobility Grants program for people with neuromuscular disorder. Our strong partnership continues to move us forward, to strive to do better and to one day in our lifetime attain our vision of finding a cure for Muscular Dystrophy," said Catherine Sherrard, CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

"Thanks to the generosity of our customers and the enthusiasm of our employees, we are making a significant difference in the lives of individuals and families living with debilitating neuromuscular diseases," said Chuck Mulvenna, President and Chief Operating Officer for Canada Safeway. "Our unique ability to reach millions of shoppers each week not only allows us the opportunity to raise funds, but to also share valuable information about this important cause."

Safeway is one of the largest corporate supporters of families living with disabilities in Canada and dedicates the entire month of August to raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Last year over $1 million was raised through a variety of in-store fundraising events and the Safeway Walk for Muscular Dystrophy. Since 2008, the campaign has provided Mobility Grants to families for 498 specialized pieces of equipment totaling over $2.7 million. In the past decade, over $76 million has been raised by Safeway across Northern America, including $5.5 million from Canada, in support of families living with neuromuscular disorders.

During the campaign, Canada Safeway customers are invited to make a donation at the checkstand when shopping at their local Safeway. With a $2.00 donation customers will receive a Safeway cart coin release key chain (while quantities last) or 5 AIR MILES reward miles. All of the funds raised during the campaign will fund valuable research and provide Safeway Mobility Grants that support equipment needs for hundreds of families in western Canada.
