(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/31/13 -- Experience life from a bygone era with an unparalleled opportunity to travel back in time. Imagine a place where time has stood still, where settlers have just arrived from foreign lands, where a blacksmith still plies his trade and a rural community where pioneers are about to transform their lives. All this and more can be found at the , a vibrant, living history museum just a short trip east of .

"It's about engaging all the senses so visitors can get a real-life historical experience," says David Makowsky, responsible for Communications and External Relations for the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. "They are able to visit a burdei (sod house) to see and walk into the first home of the earliest Ukrainian pioneers who began settling in this region 120 years ago as we showcase, preserve and present an important part of Alberta's past. These are Alberta's castles."

Eyewitness To History

An award-winning attraction, the brings history to life utilizing interpreters who don period costumes and learn the accents and skills to portray the people who once lived and worked in these historic buildings at the turn of the 20th century. When you arrive at the village's Demchuk Blacksmith Shop, and an interpreter portraying owner John Demchuk talks to you, you will believe that you are talking to him, rather than an actor cast in that role. When you reach the 1925-1930s era townsite and the Wostock Hardware Store, you're not surprised to hear Jenny Knysh utter the following as the village is that authentic: "My father sells gasoline - only 35 cents a gallon," says Knysh, standing next to working old-style gas pump. "But since you came all the way here to visit us, he can also give you a special price of three gallons for a dollar."

A Growing Ukrainian Heritage

Situated on 320 acres in Lamont County, the is home to more than 30 historic buildings including three churches of Eastern Byzantine Rite, the blacksmith shop, a fully functioning grain elevator operated by Jim Moore, agent for the Bellis Home Grain Company Elevator, and a number of active farmsteads - the village grows, harvests and mills its own wheat. For the 2013 summer season the village has added a special visiting exhibit, Journey to Canada, explaining the background behind Ukrainian immigration to Canada and why Alberta became one of the chosen destinations. Unlike the rest of the village's attractions, this is a more traditional museum-like section but adds valuable context to the overall visitor experience and is augmented by related village artifacts.

Meanwhile, even though a large number of historic structures have already been relocated, restored and furnished to a pre-1930 period in this living history museum, work is moving forward on the addition of another 20 buildings. A two-room schoolhouse is expected to be restored this fall.

Unique Food & Festivities

During the months of August and September, select Sundays play host to a number of at the village. Coming up:

Regardless of the day, stop by and try the Heritage plate at the village's restaurant. It's a delicious offering of pyrohy (perogies), holubtsi (cabbage rolls) and kovbasa (garlic sausage) with a light cucumber salad.
