Team Alberta completes solar house, offers public tours

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/13/13 -- Tomorrow, students from the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University will celebrate the completion of their solar house, Borealis. They will also announce public open houses to take place before the team disassembles the structure and leaves for competition in Irvine, Calif.

The Borealis project is Team Alberta's third entry into the international Solar Decathlon competition, which takes place October 3 to 13, 2013. One of two Canadian entries, Borealis is an 84-square-metre home aimed at facilitating sustainable living in remote areas. The home is net-zero, meaning it produces as much electricity as is consumed.

Borealis features solar photovoltaic panels, solar thermal tubes, sun tunnel skylights, an intelligent mechanical system and LED lighting. An energy recovery system stores excess energy to be used for dehumidification and heating.
