(firmenpresse) - CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND -- (Marketwired) -- 08/17/13 -- On Tuesday, August 20th at 7:00 a.m. AT, Canadian university students Cory Babiak, Sam Edwardes and Taylor Jenkins will set out from Tignish, Prince Edward Island, along the famous Confederation Trail with the goal of raising $10,000 for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.

The students will average 46.5 kilometres (km) per day, ending their exhausting 280 km trek on Sunday, August 25th in Elmira, PEI. The distance they are planning to conquer is equivalent to running seven marathons in six days, when the distance to and from the trail is included.

All avid athletes, the three runners each grew up participating in organized sports and value the important role that being a part of this environment played in their lives.

According to Vision Canada, one-in-three Canadian families cannot afford to enroll their children in sport or recreation activities - meaning many Canadian kids are missing out. Not only do organized sports and recreation get kids more active, but they also help kids to gain self-confidence, build self-esteem, learn leadership skills and develop a richer life.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charitable program that helps financially disadvantaged children ranging in age from four to 18 to participate in organized sport and recreation by covering the costs of registration, equipment and/or transportation. Since 2005, the charity has helped more than 473,000 children get off the sidelines and into the game.

About the runners:

Canadians across the nation are encouraged to donate to help these ambitious young men reach their fundraising goal of $10,000 by August 25, 2013.

Those close to the start of the trail are encouraged to come out and cheer on the team as they set off on this grueling trek.
