(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwired) -- 08/22/13 -- The all-new electric was unveiled earlier this month in London to an intimate and select audience of 250. The group was made up on representatives from a wide range of European bodies and organisations, all responsible for shaping the future of sustainable urban mobility and accelerating the transition to a low carbon future.

Ian Robertson of BMW said: "The BMW i3 heralds the dawn of a new era urban electromobility, and successfully addresses the environmental challenges facing a growing number of megacities around the world." Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced an extra GBP 500m to drive the growing market for ultra-low emission vehicles, aiming to put Britain at the forefront of sustainable driving.

Taxation benefits

The BMW i3 is eligible for a host of government-backed grants and tax breaks due to its zero emissions powertrain. In addition to the 'Plug-in' grant that reduces the OTR cost of the vehicle by GBP 5,000, both versions of the BMW i3 also benefit from a zero road fund licence charge and are exempt from the London Congestion Charge. For corporate customers, businesses benefit from 100 per cent capital write down allowance and very low levels of National Insurance taxation, whilst drivers will pay significantly less (in the case of the standard i3 zero per cent) Benefit in Kind taxation. For these customers in particular, the benefits over three years compared with contemporary internal combustion engine vehicles run into thousands of pounds.

One pedal driving

A standout feature of the BMW i3's driving experience is the single-pedal control, carefully configured by the development engineers. There is a brake and an accelerator pedal but it is possible to drive without using the brake pedal in normal driving conditions.

Production and sustainability beyond the life of the car

The manufacturing procedure and lifespan of the BMW i3 has been developed with sustainability at the forefront of thinking. Regenerative energy is used at all four BMW i plants across the globe, with 50 per cent less water consumed and 70 per cent less energy than in a conventional automotive facility.

The all-new BMW i3 will be delivered to UK customers in November 2013. It is the world's first premium electric vehicle designed from the ground up to be powered by an electric drive system. It is also a world first by virtue of bringing together visionary design, pioneering technology and an innovative vehicle concept that includes a passenger cell made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

London is leading the way in electric car use in the UK, with the world's first Ultra Low Emission Zone to appear in central London from 2020. In his announcement of the initiative, Mayor of London Boris Johnson claimed the zone would lead to a dramatic increase in air quality, and provide a major spur for the further development and mass take-up of zero and low emission vehicles in the capital.

Johnson went on to say: "We have to get the conditions right to ensure motorists can comfortably take up the option of electric vehicle motoring, and this latest innovation should help to make zero-emission vehicles a more common choice for consumers, helping to drive down pollution and improve quality of life."
