Virtual prototype saves time and money
EPLAX power supply integration uses high-precision 3D CAD models
(PresseBox) - It took the network specialists at EPLAX only a few weeks to find and implement a power supply solution for a complex security electronics testing system. The device's seven precision output channels have a combined output of 1,400W. For the switch-mode power supplies, Bremen-based EPLAX used its existing, well-proven Veropower standard devices. It was the system's mechanical specifications that posed the main challenge in this project, as they called for an accurate custom fit into the existing 19" switching cabinet and precision-controlled air flow cooling.
Instead of manufacturing the usual mechanical prototype, EPLAX's development team created an exact 3D model, a virtual prototype, using the CAD system. The virtual model was then used to plan, measure, and position all connections and controls. This procedure cut not only the usual development cost, but saved a considerable amount of time in the bargain. The new power supply unit is a perfect fit and could be integrated in the system swiftly and without problems.
