WINDCAP® Ultrasonic Wind Sensor WMT700 Now Available for Cold Climate Operations
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Helsinki, Finland - August 26, 2013 - Vaisala is pleased to announce the release
of its WINDCAP® Ultrasonic Wind Sensor WMT700, which now includes an option for
full-body heating of the unit, making it a top choice for monitoring wind
conditions in extremely cold climates with heavy snow and ice conditions.
Vaisala's WMT700 is a professional meteorological instrument that utilizes
ultrasound to determine wind speed and direction. The measurement is based on
the ultrasound traveling time from one transducer to another, depending on wind
speed. The sensor is accurate, reliable, and proven to measure wind conditions
in demanding climates, with optimal results. There are no moving parts,
allowing for low maintenance and providing the sensor with a long operational
life cycle.
Direct customer feedback played an important role in the development of this new
option. The sensor body, arms, and transducers can all be heated to minimize
snow and ice build-up, to ensure high quality data acquisition and reliable
operations.
Our customers require continuous and accurate information without data gaps or
inconsistent readings, even in the most demanding environments. The WMT700
sensor is used for a number of applications, including meteorology, maritime,
airports, roadways, and wind power operations. For example, meteorologists
working at the US National Weather Service, rely on Vaisala's WINDCAP®
technology to provide accurate wind data for weather sites and assist in
forecasting conditions. The aviation industry depends on sensor data from AWOS
(Automatic Weather Observation Station) sites to collect weather data for safe
aircraft and airport ground operations. The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA)
approved Vaisala's WMT700 sensor for use on federal AWOS stations following
rigorous testing for reliability and accuracy. Roadway maintenance services use
the WMT700 sensor at weather stations to monitor travel conditions and to help
ensure road safety during winter conditions.
