2013 Community Report highlights concrete results of the institution's plan

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/25/13 -- President Elizabeth Cannon delivered the University of Calgary's annual today and spoke passionately about the university's achievements.

"This report is a celebration and reflection of this past year's activities and accomplishments and a testament to the capabilities and dedication of our students, faculty, staff and alumni," said Cannon.

Among universities younger than 50 years, the University of Calgary currently ranks first in Canada, second in North America and 16th worldwide, according to the (QS) ranking.

The university is building on this position to achieve its Eyes High vision to become one of Canada's top five research universities by 2016, where research and innovative teaching go hand in hand, and where it fully engages the communities it both serves and leads.

In her report, Cannon outlined the progress the University of Calgary has made on its objectives, including key initiatives associated with the University of Calgary's two core roadmaps: the Academic Plan and Strategic Research Plan. She also highlighted dozens of examples of how the university has supported the growing intellectual, educational, economic and research needs of the community.

"We are reimagining what this university can be. We are focused on the learning needs of our students as well as how our academy can achieve research advances to solve real-world problems," said Cannon. "Our journey towards achieving our Eyes High goals by our 50th anniversary in 2016 has gained significant momentum this year and I'm thrilled to be able to celebrate such significant progress."

Highlights from the University of Calgary's 2013 Community Report:

One of the foundational commitments of the Eyes High vision is fully integrating the university with the community. A recent shows that the University of Calgary contributes $7.92 billion annually to the provincial economy, providing a solid return on investment for Alberta taxpayers and delivering vital contributions to economic and social innovation in Alberta, across Canada and beyond.

"A leading Canadian university, like the University of Calgary, is an integral part of Calgary's sustainable economic development strategy," said Bruce Graham, president & CEO for Calgary Economic Development. "As the University of Calgary fulfills its Eyes High strategic direction to become a global intellectual hub, youth from Alberta and around the world can get a world-class education and launch a prosperous career. This helps to secure Calgary's competitive edge and uphold our role as Canada's most enterprising city."

"I continue to be amazed at the dedication and accomplishments of our incredible students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends," said Cannon. "We are already off to a fantastic start this year and there is far more to come with some exciting announcements that will further enrich the quality and breadth of learning."
