Birkmeyer, MD, an internationally recognized performance measurement and hospital quality expert, will present a free webinar on Tuesday, November 12th, on how the State of Michigan has become a national leader in using Regional Collaboratives of hospitals and physicians to improve the quality of care.

The live 30-minute webinar, which begins at 3:30 p.m. EST and will include a question and answer period, is open to all healthcare executives, administrators and clinicians, who can register through this . It is being hosted by , a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics.

This is the first in a series of educational webinars being hosted by , a leading provider of real-time healthcare analytics, designed to illustrate the fundamental keys to establishing successful quality improvement collaboratives. These webinars, drawing on Dr. Birkmeyer's more than 20 years of experience in building clinically oriented quality improvement initiatives, will demonstrate best practices for adoption, how to overcome common roadblocks, and how to establish funding mechanisms.

The webinar will focus on how states and regions can collaborate to improve quality, reduce cost and support innovation by effectively learning from their data and from each other. Dr. Birkmeyer will draw on the successes of collaboratives supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan and the Michigan Hospital Association, such as the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative ().

Dr. Birkmeyer will discuss how several Regional Collaborative Organizations in the State of Michigan can now more accurately measure healthcare outcomes, better understand the variance in quality within an organization and compare performance to other physicians and healthcare institutions. Dr. Birkmeyer is the George D. Zuidema Professor of Surgery and Director of the Center for Healthcare Outcomes & Policy at the University of Michigan and has a long track record of research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality. He has served in advisory roles for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the American College of Surgeons- National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, and chairs the expert panel on evidence-based hospital referral for the Leapfrog Group, a large coalition of health care purchasers.

Dr. Birkmeyer is also the co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of ArborMetrix. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2006.
