(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 12/02/13 -- Following a meeting with Results Canada, a grassroots organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty through the commitment of passionate and engaged citizens, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie, reiterated today Canada's support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, cementing Canada's leadership role in improving the health of those living in poverty around the world, especially women and girls.

"Maternal, newborn and child health is the flagship priority for Canada's international engagement and the Global Fund is one of our key partners," said Minister Paradis. "HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria cause an estimated four million deaths per year among those living in poverty, especially women and girls. Through the Global Fund, Canada's investment is saving lives."

Canada's support to the Global Fund is a critical component of the $2.85 billion Muskoka Initiative announced by Prime Minister Harper in June 2010. The initiative aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality and improve the health of mothers and children in the world's poorest countries by focusing on three key paths: strengthening health systems, preventing and treating the leading illnesses and diseases that kill women and children and improving nutrition.

"A window of opportunity now exists to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, to a point where they are no longer public health threats in developing countries," added Minister Paradis. "Canada is seizing that opportunity: we are safeguarding the substantial achievements already made and helping find new and innovative ways to prevent, care and treat these diseases."

Canada's commitment of $650 million over three years as announced by Prime Minister Harper earlier today, represents an increase of over 20 percent from our last replenishment funding, announced in 2010

"RESULTS Canada is proud of this government's tremendous leadership in the eradication of AIDS, TB and malaria," said Amy Bartlett, Executive Director for RESULTS Canada. "This increased contribution means that the world's poorest will now have access to the life-saving interventions they need."

The Global Fund was created to dramatically increase resources to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The organization invests in large-scale prevention, treatment, and care programs, and supports national health systems and health workers in the world's poorest regions. The Global Fund has increased access to life-saving drugs for those most in need and has saved an estimated 8.7 million lives to date, including in excess of 100,000 lives per month in recent years.

BACKGROUNDER

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is a unique, public-private partnership and international financing institution dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities represents an innovative approach to international health financing. Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has disbursed over $22 billion for grants in 151 countries. It takes a country-led approach, with national governments and local organizations leading program design and implementation.

Canada is a strong supporter of the Global Fund and has made a new commitment of $650 million over three years (2014-2016). This represents an increase of over 20 percent from our last replenishment funding, announced in 2010 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper for the 2011 to 2013 period, and brings our total commitment to over $2.1 billion since the inception of the Global Fund in 2002.

Since its creation in 2002, with contributions from Canada and other international donors, programs supported by the Global Fund have saved an estimated 8.7 million lives, through (all figures approximate):
