Canada Firmly Committed to Global Health Security

(firmenpresse) - ROME, ITALY -- (Marketwired) -- 12/13/13 -- Today, at the fourteenth Global Health Security Initiative (GHSI) Ministerial Meeting in Rome, Italy, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, confirmed Canada's commitment as an active partner in preparedness and response efforts to address global threats to public health.

Joined by other G7 countries, Mexico, the European Commission and the World Health Organization, Canada took part in a fruitful meeting and discussion on several threats to health security that have an impact on the global community.

"Our Government is committed to protecting the health and safety of Canadians by sharing Canada's expertise with global health experts," said Minister Ambrose. "International collaborations such as the Global Health Security Initiative help Canada stay ahead of emerging public health threats and respond more effectively when epidemics emerge."

Topics discussed included emerging infectious diseases, such as avian influenza A (H7N9) virus and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), the importance of sharing biological materials, including virus samples, in our scientific communities, and the importance of looking at antimicrobial resistance through a global perspective.

The meeting concluded with a joint communique issued by GHSI members.

Canada continues to play a leading role in the GHSI, making contributions in areas such as governance, laboratory capacity, risk communications, and surveillance.
