Starting today German Authorities issue the new ID Card
Baar, 01.11.2010 - Last week OpenLimit handed over version 1.0 of the
AusweisApp to the federal ministry of the interior (BMI) in due form and
time, so that today the new ID card in Germany can be launched according to
plan. 'The eID era in Germany begins', said OpenLimit's CEO Marc Gurov
gladly. 'As of today the new German ID Act comes into effect. From now on
and with this new document every German citizen will be able to
unmistakably prove one's identity online and to securely authenticate
transactions on the internet. Last November the Federal Ministry of the
Interior (BMI) awarded the contract for the creation of the AusweisApp to
Siemens IT Solutions and Services, who mandated OpenLimit with the software
development.
OpenLimit provides the eID-Server
Since January 1st, 2010 about 200 companies and public administrations have
been testing the new ID card, the AusweisApp and the eID server
infrastructure behind it. For the next year the BMI expects that at least
50 of those institutions will go live with their applications. All online
service providers who want to use the new ID card for authentication
processes need to integrate an eID server into their website. Already
during the test run of the new ID card, OpenLimit and the Bundesdruckerei
successfully established an eID service together. Furthermore, OpenLimit
has implemented the eID server with several other partners as well and is
ready for today's move from a testing environment into live operation.
