Harbor Homes, LLC of Thomasville, Georgia announced the recent launch of Survive-a-Storm Shelters as a complement to its disaster housing and supply business. According to company spokesman, Matt Williams, “Entering into the disaster preparedness arena just makes sense for Harbor Homes. We are seeing a shift in focus from disaster response to disaster preparedness and mitigation by the many state and federal agencies with whom we regularly interact. The recent tornadoes in Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and the rest of Tornado Alley evidence a lack of preparedness. We are bringing our considerable experience and resources to bear on the problem, actively marketing above ground and below ground tornado and storm shelters–both above and below ground–as well as community and big box retail storm shelters and safe rooms.”
Harbor Homes already manufactures a variety of disaster housing solutions for the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and various foreign governments and nongovernmentmental organizations. Harbor Homes has recently completed the construction of 1,200 homes in Haiti and has had a presence in Sierra Leone, Antigua, Chile, Venezuela, and Columbia. Harbor Homes holds a current, active $153 million contract with FEMA and plans to leverage this experience to assist prospective recipients of FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).
Survive-a-Storm Shelters is establishing a rapidly expanding network of dealers and installers to aid in the distribution of its tornado and storm shelters. Survive-a-Storm Shelters is targeting Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Dealers are being awarded exclusive territories and will represent and install storm shelters under the direction of the manufacturer. Landscaping companies, pool and spa installers, excavation companies, and residential home builders are ideally situated to install underground storm shelters, and the company has been fielding calls throughout their target market from prospective dealers.
