(firmenpresse) - Positive economic development in Brandenburg continues apace: last year, the ZAB agency supported 106 investment projects, 411 innovation projects and the development of 41 technology-oriented start-ups. In total, ZAB’s activities have led to the creation of 3,023 new jobs – some ten percent more than in 2012 – and an overall investment volume of 412.2 million euros. The region’s industry clusters attracted as much as 96 percent of the investments, 85 percent of the innovation projects and 100 percent of the technology start-ups. This impressively demonstrates the advantages of Brandenburg’s cluster strategy. Particularly noteworthy in this development is the fact that nearly twice as many new jobs than in the previous year were created by companies investing for the first time in this region. Promising projects are on the cards in the new year, too, in the two sectors that are driving this development, logistics and industrial production.

Ralf Christoffers, Brandenburg’s Minister for Economic and European Affairs, is satisfied with the work of the ZAB agency: “I’m pleased that almost all of the new investments were performed in industries on which our innovation strategy focuses. This shows that we’re on the right path toward connecting businesses with one another and building links between R&D and industry. We’ll continue in this direction in 2014, and our efforts will include several cluster conferences. Our innovation strategy goes beyond a single legislature period and decisively contributes to making Brandenburg and Berlin a key innovation region in Europe. All in all, the ZAB agency achieved impressive results last year. With a significant rise in the number of projects supported and jobs created, as well as with the high levels reached in both investments and innovation plans, ZAB is playing an important role in the state’s structural development. Starting this year, the agency has two additional instruments in its hands: a new location website called “Brandenburg Business Guide,” and advisory services taken over from LASA that provide a wealth of information on such topics as skilled workers, jobs, and qualifications. Thanks to ZAB, Brandenburg is the first German state to offer an integrated program of economic and labour-related consulting under one roof.” Minister Christoffers sees ZAB’s operating results as confirmation of the state’s economic policies: “The region stands out more and more as an industry location, even from a global perspective. The beneficiaries are the cluster businesses and the SMEs, as even the classic tools used for SME promotion are an important facet of any business promotion policy.”

Dr. Steffen Kammradt, spokesperson for ZAB management, explains: “Indeed, 2013 was a good year for economic development in Brandenburg. Logistics and industrial production attracted most of the investments. Eight projects were developed in the automotive sector throughout the region, from Eberswalde to the Elbe-Elster district. And the trend goes on: right now, in fact, we’re working on ten more automotive projects. Brandenburg also attracted new investments in other industries: Siemens developed a turbine testing centre in Ludwigsfelde; Theobroma, a Dutch chocolate manufacturer, invested in Velten; and Bröring built a compound feed plant in Wittenberge. In addition, numerous existing SMEs also developed expansion projects, most notably Big Image Systems, a Swedish company that installed a unique large-format printer in Potsdam. However, the strongest growth in the jobs market in 2013 was seen in logistics. With new investments by Rossmann, Amazon and the pharmaceutical logistics company Unitax, as well as a range of expansion investments, as many as 1,159 jobs were created in Brandenburg’s logistics industry last year. This has made 2013 the strongest year in the sector since ZAB was founded. We are confident that this trend will continue, especially with new instruments such as the ‘ZAB Arbeit’ department that aims at securing the availability of a skilled workforce in the region”.

Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, ZAB Executive Director, emphasizes: “2013 was an exceptionally good year for innovation. We supported as many as 411 projects – 85 percent of them in the clusters –, which is more than ever before. We also made great progress toward internationalising Brandenburg’s economy. With twelve new international investors, ZAB has now successfully concluded a total of 163 international investment projects since it was founded. This benefits the entire region. We also made our mark in foreign trade, providing as many as 741 consultations and arranging nine delegation visits to a total of 141 companies and R&D institutes. We deliberately pushed forward in countries that have been on our radar for years, as our efforts in the Netherlands, for example, have shown. We have also headed into new regions: one of the largest delegations, with 45 participants, went to South Africa and Namibia in May 2013. In the energy sector, the public discussion about energy transition resulted in a significant increase in demand for solutions that lower costs and raise efficiency. Moreover, ZAB carried out 214 consultations as Brandenburg’s energy agency, processed 41 applications to the “Energieberatung Mittelstand” program as regional partner of the KfW bank, and prepared 32 surveys under contract to the ILB bank.”
