New Managing Director: A Carefully Prepared Handover

ID: 332352

(PresseBox) - A change of management is on the cards at firearms manufacturer Carl Walther GmbH: Manfred Woerz, who has been at the helm of the company since 1993, is due to retire end 2014. The name of his successor is Alexander Lenert, who has been registered as joint managing director in the corporation registry since May.
He aims to use the rest of the year getting a thorough grounding from his predecessor in the specifics of a sports and defense firearms manufacturing company that is, moreover, part of an internationally operating group.
Aged 44, Lenert studied production engineering at Erlangen-Nuremberg University and comes to Ulm with a track record of two decades in the automotive industry: On completing his studies, his first job was with a car manufacturer. Most recently, he was CEO of a world-famous supplier of automotive parts. He sees plenty of parallels with his new post: "I'm looking forward to continuing my predecessor's outstanding work and see my task as enriching the outstanding Engineering competence of the Carl Walther company with my long experience of production in the automotive industry
Business-wise, things are looking extremely rosy for this longstanding company at the moment, not least thanks to major orders that include the shipment of 45,000 Walther P99 NL pistols to the Netherlands police and strong demand for Walther firearms in the USA - the important US market is served by Walther Arms USA, founded in 2013. In the shooting sports sector, its market share - for example, for match air rifles - is as high as 40 per cent in international competitions. Moreover, Walther can already look back over one year as "Official Partner of the German Shooting Federation."

Founded in 1886 in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia, the Carl Walther company today is known for large-caliber pistols used by police and other law enforcement authorities. Additionally, it makes high-quality sporting weapons. In both of these areas it can look back on a tradition of excellent gunmaking going back more than 125 years. Legendary handguns bearing the famous WALTHER ribbon logo include the Walther PPK (favored by Agent 007 James Bond), the P.38/P1 pistol of the German army and the well-known P99 and PPQ, all of which have large fan communities throughout the world. In 1993 the company was acquired by the UMAREX Group, which is based in Arnsberg, Germany. Carl Walther manufactures most of its weapons in the factory which it established in 2005 in Ulm, and it has its headquarters together with its parent company Umarex in Arnsberg. An U.S. subsidiary, Walther Arms, was founded in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 2013.
