Electronic interlocking system from Funkwerk to control
whole marshalling yard in Sweden
- World leader in iron ore products expands rail network
- Increased productivity and safety of marshalling operations with
'Alister'
- Electronic interlocking system Alister now operating in nine
countries, worldwide demand increasing
Funkwerk has scored a new success in equipping railway depots with its
electronic interlocking system, Alister. Swedish-based
Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB), one of the world's leading producers of
iron ore products for the steel industry, plans to upgrade its mine railway
system in the Sjöbangården marshalling yard in Kiruna with Funkwerk's
leading interlocking system technology. An appropriate contract worth
millions has now been placed with Funkwerk. Funkwerk will execute the
contract in cooperation with Leonhard Weiss GmbH&Co. KG, which will be
responsible for track construction.
Developed by Funkwerk, Alister now operates effectively in over 40
applications throughout nine countries.
'And the demand in Europe for this solution continues to rise, as
electronic interlocking systems are increasingly important for efficient
and safe railway operations. Processes particularly in marshalling yards
can thus be automated to reduce the operating costs. Our Alister system
provides a sophisticated and technologically groundbreaking solution here,'
explains Dr. Hans Grundner, Chief executive officer from Funkwerk.
Proven effectiveness decisive for new contract
Alister has proven its effectiveness many times over, even under extreme
conditions, in Europe north of the Arctic Circle as much as in tropical
Indonesia. LKAB is one of the many companies able to testify to the
benefits of Alister after years of practical application.
The Sjöbangården marshalling yard north of the Arctic Circle was completely
modernised between 2007 and 2009 and equipped for the first time with the
modern electronic interlocking system Alister from Funkwerk. The centrally
operated system has since monitored and controlled marshalling operations
on 12 tracks with 32 points. As part of the system's capacity increase, a
further 18 points along with 25 signals from Funkwerk are now to be
integrated into the existing interlocking system. All traffic in the
marshalling yard will in future be managed by Alister from a control
centre. In the course of upgrading, the depot will also gain a further
connection to the network of Trafikverket, the operator of Sweden's
long-distance railway network. The upgrade is scheduled for commissioning
in the second half of 2012.
Following the upgrade, the benefits of the Alister interlocking system will
extend to the whole rail network in the Sjöbangården depot. Along with the
core functions of the interlocking system and increased reaction times, the
modern user interfaces will ensure greater safety and productivity.
Funkwerk developed its interlocking system for LKAB with focus on the
customer's safety requirements. The system is certified in compliance with
the SIL (Safety Integrity Level) standard issued by the CENELEC (European
Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization).
Market for cost-effective depot controlling systems growing
Cost-effective electronic interlocking systems are currently turning into a
global market worth billions. To improve their economic efficiency for
marshalling operations, but also in freight and passenger transport,
railway companies need signalling technology characterised by low
investment costs and long-term, cost-effective operation with a high level
of security. The technological Alister platform from Funkwerk meets these
requirements and is easy to adapt to different interlocking applications.
It is therefore suited both for passenger transport and for use in depots,
marshalling yards, industrial railways, and gravity hump yards.
Alister has already gained Funkwerk a significant share in the market and
promises above-average growth in light of the Europe-wide modernisation of
railway operations over the next few years.
