The outdoor surveillance project, which isbeing integrated by Abdulla Fouad Holding Company for SumitomoCorporation under the prime contractor Saudi Aramco, will be fullyoperational by September 2009.KAUST, located in the Red Sea coastal region of Thuwal, is therealization of King Abdullah's vision to create an international,graduate-level research university in the Saudi Kingdom. Its harshdesert climate, large campus perimeter and waterside location createda unique outdoor security challenge for the university."The university needed to provide 24-hour video surveillance of theperimeter with automatic intrusion detection," commented OusamaKabbani, Abdulla Fouad's Industrial Security & Safety Division'sGeneral Manager. "The original design called for the use of analogcameras with external video analytic encoders, which has been thestandard approach for intelligent video surveillance. When SightLogixdemonstrated their video analytic surveillance equipment integratedwith GPS target location," he continued, "Saudi Aramco took theextraordinary action to revise the project's design to incorporatethe SightLogix solution."Saudi Aramco revised its original plan when SightLogix demonstrated amuch greater detection range, which allowed for a sizable reductioninthe number of cameras, mounting poles and infrastructure needed forthe project while providing an additional level of redundancy. Forthe KAUST deployment, 74 SightLogix SightSensors are used to providelong-range, GPS-based alarms and target data for display into theGeutebruck video management system. This same GPS-based data is alsoused by 31 SightLogix SightTrackers to automatically position PelcoEsprit Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) cameras for close-up visual identificationof detected targets. Such automated tracking of objects wasparticularly important considering the large outdoor area undersecurity management. "The SightLogix approach added significantly tothe perimeter security capabilities of this project," added Mr.Kabbani.Capable of operating in harsh outdoor conditions with a temperaturerange of -50C to +70C (-58 degreesF to +158 degreesF), SightLogixsystems are dry-nitrogen pressurized meeting NEMA-4X enclosurestandards, ensuring that they operate at peak efficiency regardlessof climate.
