Online Exchanges Ease the Stress With Rewarding Alternatives

(firmenpresse) - MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/16/14 -- , Inc. today announced the results of its inaugural survey that polled over 8,300 Listia users nationwide to track digital marketplace trends within the sharing economy. The survey found a significant majority of people (80 percent) experience stress when decluttering, and one in five people would rather sit in traffic than declutter and more than one in ten would rather get a tooth pulled than tidy up.

With the proliferation of online marketplaces, people are able to experience some stress relief when ridding homes of old or unused items. While traditional purging tactics like donating to charities (64 percent) or giving away to friends (54 percent) or family (54 percent) are still in practice, more people are turning to peer-to-peer online marketplaces (52 percent) as the sharing economy gains popularity. Among all the options, people are least likely to give up a Saturday in order to host a garage sale (32 percent).

"While there's no doubt decluttering can be stressful, sharing-oriented marketplaces are making it easier, safer and more rewarding than ever to find new alternatives to extract value from unused items in your home," said Gee Chuang, CEO and co-founder of Listia. "More and more users prefer communities like these not only to declutter but also to connect with others."

As the sharing economy grows and evolves, the survey revealed that consumers:

: Respondents are now using online marketplaces to auction away items they no longer want (52 percent) and consistently donating to charities (63 percent).

: Thirty-one percent of respondents will hunt for Halloween costumes on an online marketplace versus online full-price stores (27 percent).

: Women respondents claimed to spend 4.4 hours a month decluttering while men came in at 4.1 hours. Most (50 percent) only spend a few hours each month purging, but up to 10 percent dedicate more than 10 hours a month to the task.

: Holidays and special occasions are primary drivers for decluttering as nearly 30 percent of respondents wait until they have a special occasion or holiday at their home to get rid of junk.

Listia conducted a survey of 8300 Listia users nationwide from August 28th, 2104 to September 2nd, 2014. The survey was carried out using Google Forms.
