SEATTLE, WA, April 18, 2011- Nanotech Systems Inc. announced today that
the company is launching a major initiative to investigate nanoparticle
drug delivery of antibiotic compounds using PLGA of (
poly-lactide-co-glycolide), a nanomolecule with FDA approval for use in
humans. Nanotech Systems CEO, Dr. David Scratchley, says that PLGA has
been found useful for delivery of a host of different drugs but the use of
PLGA to deliver antibiotics may lessen bacterial resistance to a wide
spectrum of antibiotics ranging from American Bioanalytical's Gentamycin to
Cefoxitin from Merck&Company. Dr. Scratchley believes that this area of
study represents an effective strategy to expand Nanotech Systems' market
for PLGA. Nanotech Systems is evaluating applications of PLGA as a means
of delivering antibiotics to infections which may develop in the central
nervous system as treatment of these infections is often difficult due to
the problems encountered by antibiotics in crossing into the brain across
the blood-brain barrier.
