Western Canada is known for producing the highest quality wheat, Great Western Brewery has taken this world-class ingredient to brew premium Saskatchewan wheat beer.
Krystall (pronounced like KRIS-tal) is a blend of two Western Canadian crops, Saskatchewan malted wheat and Saskatchewan malted barley.
"The combination of the wheat and barley provides a really unique flavour profile," says Michael Micovcin, President and CEO.
What separates Krystall Wheat beer from others is filtration. Great Western filters this wheat beer. "Most wheat beers are unfiltered so they tend to be cloudy, with remnants from some of the raw materials that haven't been filtered out," explains Micovcin. "Krystall is crystal clear!""
Great Western believes in creating brews as local as possible. The result, Master Brewer Viv Jones says, is a beer that is unique in all of North America. "When you try Krystall you'll get a refreshing taste as the hops burst in the roof of your mouth. I love that!"
Krystall is the latest in the award winning Original 16 family of beers. "We brew this with our Original 16 hop philosophy. We do our hopping so there is very little after bitterness. In Canada we like beer with a hoppy flavour, without the bitter aftertaste."
"Wheat beer is very popular in the world," says Jones, "and we're excited to brew it for Western Canada."
To enhance the taste, Jones says you could stick a wedge of lime, lemon or orange in with Krystall. "That goes well with it if you like fruit with your beer. A lot of people don't, though," he adds with laugh.
