12-fold driver with motor stalling detection and additional LED and PWM
functions
With the E520.01, ELMOS presents a semiconductor for driving up to three
unipolar stepper motors. The IC is distinguished by its elaborate
protective features: The 12-fold driver comes with high-performance motor
stalling detection and comprehensive diagnostic and safety functions for
the protection of the whole system.
The IC is qualified for automotive and industrial applications. Potential
fields of use are stepper motors, DC motors, relay and LED applications, or
switch control circuits.
Stalling detection is the outstanding protective function. If the motor
stalls, it is switched off automatically if opted for; potential static
noise is thus eliminated and the mechanical components are protected
against overload. The other protective features include extensive
short-circuit protection (detection, limitation, and diagnostics), allowing
for safe operation even under inductive loads. Each output is monitored
independently of each other for short circuits or interruption. Overvoltage
and undervoltage switch-off and temperature monitoring complete the safety
functions.
Not only stepper motors but also LED's or relays can be operated at the 12
outputs. For this purpose, the component has 3 adjustable PWM generators
whose frequencies are 200Hz or 25kHz according to adjustment. The duty
cycle allows for linear or logarithmic configuration.
Apart from configuration and diagnostics, the stepper motors are driven
through an SPI interface. For this purpose, the stepper pattern desired by
the customer (full step, half step, or wave drive) is simply transferred.
All other functions such as automatic stalling detection are provided by
the IC.
If only 8 channels are required, the E520.03 can be used. The IC E520.01 is
supplied in a QFN 32L5 package, the E520.03 in a QFN 20L5 package.
