Dr. Lauren Greenberg Examines a Recent FDA Warning About the Hyaluronic Acid Filler Expression and Touches on the Importance of Researching a Qualified Injector

(firmenpresse) - PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/21/14 -- , many of which are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), are used to help treat common signs of facial aging, explains Dr. Lauren Greenberg, a . However, she says, it is important to note that not every hyaluronic acid-based product is appropriate for this use. According to a recent FDA announcement, some medical professionals are reportedly using an HA-based formula as a dermal filler despite the fact it is not designed for this purpose. As a result, some patients are experiencing unexpected side effects. In order to avoid this, Dr. Greenberg advises patients to look for a practitioner who is using recognized cosmetic soft tissue fillers intended for use in the face.

To assist individuals in their research, Dr. Greenberg explains when considering non-surgical facial rejuvenation. The FDA alert states that a hyaluronic acid-based gel called Expression or Expression Injectable, which is designed for use as an intranasal splint for rhinoplasty, has been associated with adverse effects when utilized as a dermal filler. The events reported include painful swelling, lumps, discoloration, and the development of hard nodules. The release clarifies that Expression is not FDA-approved as a dermal filler. Furthermore, the FDA recommends that licensed injectors stop using this substance as an injectable solution.

Fillers made for cosmetic use are available from well-known brands such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®, which have been studied and in the cosmetic marketplace for years. Other soft tissue fillers like Sculptra® Aesthetic are not HA-based, but have also been designed for and used in the face for years, says Dr. Greenberg. She advises patients to carefully research both the injector and the dermal filler before initiating treatment, adding, "If it is a lower cost than normal and seems too good to be true, research the injector and the filler."

Ultimately, Dr. Greenberg says she strives to educate her patients on popular cosmetic enhancement products and procedures, including both the benefits and risks involved in treatment. Offering high-quality, FDA-approved options is of the utmost importance to her, she affirms, as well as helping to ensure patients are well informed.
