Medieval Festival Showcases Connection Between Vikings and Art

(firmenpresse) - PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/21/14 -- Do you know how Vikings and the Book of Kells are connected? Have you ever heard a minstrel play a Norse Jorvik panpipe? Learn about this and more at 's Fall on Sunday, October 26 -- 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Glencairn Museum welcomes visitors to travel back to a time when illuminated manuscripts, art and faith clashed with Viking raiders -- changing the course of religion and culture forever.

In addition to Viking weapons- and a mock battle, an authentic reproduction of the Book of Kells will be displayed for comparison with designs in the Great Hall. Scholars believe the book was in the Iona monastery in Scotland when Vikings attacked it in 806 and slaughtered 68 monks. The survivors fled to Kells, bringing the book with them.

Visitors will see a Gutenberg-style printing press in action; have a chance to write their name in ancient Runes; and get dressed up as a Viking. While exploring Glencairn's unique galleries, visitors can also learn about the influence of religion on medieval weaponry and try their hand at spinning wool.

Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students with ID. Admission is free for children 3 yrs and under and museum members.

For more information visit or call 267-502-2600.
