Acclaimed Attorney Joseph Cavallo Never Disappoints With His Innovative Tactics

His most prominent case was the defense of Gregory Haidl, son of former Orange County Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl, whom he effectively represented in a 2004 widely publicized case. When the initial trial against Haidl resulted in a retrial, Cavallo assembled a focus group, or "shadow jury," to provide advice throughout the trial, a practice employed by lawyers for years. The shadow jury often sits in on a trial and takes notes on behalf of the defense. In this case, Cavallo called upon the jurors from the first trial to offer guidance over the course of the second trial. Cavallo took the common practice one step further by paying the former jurors as consultants, something that up to this point had been unheard of. A significant advantage of Cavallo's rather unusual strategy was that the prosecution was prevented from speaking to the former jurors about the case, since paid consultants may only confer with the other side.
"Prosecutors are just frustrated because they were too lazy to think of corralling the jurors themselves," Cavallo responded to criticism following his decision. "Sometimes a defense attorney has to think outside the box. It's my job to do whatever is necessary within the confines of the law to achieve a favorable result for my client." 's innovative technique led to appearances on the O'Reilly Factor, CNN, MSNBC, and Good Morning America to discuss the controversial case. Cavallo's strategy did not only meet criticism, he also received support from fellow jurists: "If defense lawyers can take advantage of some point of law, they should take it," said Diane Karpman, a renowned Los Angeles attorney. "[It's] brilliant lawyering that is consistent with defense lawyer duties."
In People v. Haidl, et al., Cavallo expected the former jurors to provide valuable insights about the lawyers, witnesses, and evidence presented, a plan that proved to work out brilliantly. The Haidl case, however, is just one example of Cavallo's innovative and successful approaches -- in the course of his career he has achieved case dismissals and not guilty verdicts for multiple defense clients resulting in more than $20 million in damages for his clients.
After earning his bachelor's degree from St. Peter's College in New Jersey, studied law at Western State University in California. With over 20 years of experience in personal injury and criminal defense law, Cavallo has appeared as a guest on numerous network television programs for his expert opinion as well as to discuss his often controversial tactics.
