Barley Council Looks to Next Steps for Rail Transportation

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/02/14 -- The Barley Council of Canada (BCC) is optimistic about Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and Transport Canada's announcement regarding the extension of minimum grain carriage volume requirements.

"We would like to thank the federal government for continuing to give its attention to this file and ensuring that grain and all commodities get to market in a timely manner," said BCC Chair Brian Otto.

The BCC also supports the Order in Council's requirement for railways to submit winter contingency plans to the federal government, including reports on car order fulfillment by corridor.

"The importance of ensuring movement of product in all directions-West, East, North and South-is imperative," added Otto. "Car order fulfillment by corridor could help to alleviate future congestion if all the alternatives are utilized."

To build on these enforced requirements, BCC will continue to advocate for the inclusion of penalty provisions as a mandatory component of all service level agreements through the ongoing Canada Transportation Act (CTA) review.

"We fully support the government's emphasis on accountability," added Otto. "We look forward to a time when a full contractual system-enforcing all parties to meet the obligations of the contracts they signed-is the standard for a sustainable transportation structure in Canada."
