Environmental prize awarded to Kemira's waste effluent technology in Germany
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Kemira OyjPress ReleaseJuly 15, 2009 at 9.00 am (CET+1)An environmental prize has been awarded to the aluminum producerNordAlu for its waste effluent treatment plant in Germany. The plantwas built and developed by Kemira and uses Kemira's patented wasteeffluent technology. The prize was awarded by the Association forStudies and the Promotion of the Economy of Schleswig-Holstein. Thiswas the 25th time that the prize was awarded for a contribution tosustainable development. The other winners of this year'senvironmental prize were Hamburg Airport in the transportationcategory and Familia retail store in the energy saving category.According to the jury, NordAlu GmbH makes a significant contributionto the conservation of natural resources by using processes andtechnologies that convert waste into usable raw materials. Besidesthe recycling of materials, this technology has helped NordAlu tominimize the amount of waste it produces. Before Kemira'sinstallation NordAlu was producing 3,500 tons of liquid and solidaluminum waste per year. With the new plant the amount of waste wasreduced to less than 500 tons annually, which also reduced costsconsiderably.The award-winning plant recovers aluminum hydroxide, sodium aluminateand phosphoric acid from the production and surface treatment ofaluminum profiles.
