Charleston Plastic Surgeon Details Emotional Benefits of Labiaplasty
Dr. Ram Kalus Discusses the Potential for Labiaplasty to Enhance Patient Confidence, as Well as the Function and Aesthetic Appearance of the Labia
(firmenpresse) - CHARLESTON, SC -- (Marketwired) -- 12/09/14 -- One of the most common misconceptions women have about labia redundancy is that it is a rare condition, explains Dr. Ram Kalus, a . Excess labia minora and/or majora, also called labial hypertrophy, affects numerous women, he says, and they may suffer from much more than aesthetic dissatisfaction. , he states, is designed to reduce excess labial skin and enhance the cosmetic appearance of the area. However, in his experience, this procedure potentially can also provide an increase in self-esteem and may offer a significant emotional boost.
Patients experiencing self-consciousness stemming from this condition are often hesitant to discuss their concerns, even with physicians, Dr. Kalus notes. He says he strives to offer compassionate care to these women while explaining the many , such as the ability to restore high self-regard. Other benefits of labiaplasty may include:
Reduction of excess skin in the labia minora and labia majora
Increased comfort during normal activities like exercising
Reduced discomfort during intercourse
Reduced visibility of labia in clothing
Enhanced aesthetic appearance of the area
Dr. Kalus says many patients have reported renewed enjoyment of many activities they once felt uncomfortable participating in after receiving labiaplasty. "From a functional standpoint, redundant labia can result in pinching, discomfort with certain exercises such as cycling or spin classes, and pain with intercourse. From a cosmetic standpoint, visibility through panties or bathing suit can be a very real concern."
Labiaplasty can offer a multitude of benefits for the appropriate patient; however, Dr. Kalus indicates this procedure is not for everyone. Determining requires a physical examination and medical history review, he explains, as well as a discussion about the woman's expectations. He says women of all ages can experience symptoms of this condition, including teenagers. Anyone under the age of 18 requires parental consent, he notes.
Ultimately, Dr. Kalus hopes to reassure his patients that labial redundancy is completely normal, and patients do not have to suffer from the physical and emotional discomfort associated with this condition. "The most important take home message is that concerns with labial hypertrophy are far more common than many women think, yet they often can be easily correctable with a high predictability of success and minimal risk of complications. Women should not feel either embarrassed or 'alone,' and they should be reassured that their problem can almost certainly be easily corrected with a short outpatient surgical procedure in under an hour."
