Bloom Lake General Partner Limited Pleads Guilty to 45 Fisheries Act Offences

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 12/24/14 -- Bloom Lake General Partner Limited pleaded guilty to 45 offences under the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations on December 18, 2014 in the Criminal and Penal Division of the Court of Quebec.
Bloom Lake General Partner Limited has been ordered to pay a fine of $7.5 million, resulting in the largest penalty ever imposed for environmental offences in Canada. $6.83 million of the fine will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund.
The infractions under the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations include the release of non-compliant mining effluent and ferric sulphate deposits into fish-bearing water at the Bloom Lake mine site. Among other infractions, Bloom Lake General Partner Limited also failed to comply with an Inspector's Direction.
The Public Prosecution Service of Canada is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest. The PPSC is also responsible for providing prosecution-related advice to law enforcement agencies across Canada.
