(firmenpresse) - LEVIS, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 12/22/14 -- Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement following the arrest by the Service de police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) of an individual who is alleged to have perpetrated a hoax regarding terrorist activity.

"I commend the efforts of the SPVM for their work to investigate and act on all threats. Ongoing vigilance on the part of our law enforcement organizations is key to ensuring the safety and security of all Canadians."

The Government of Canada has taken a number of policy and legislative actions to address terrorism, including the Combating Terrorism Act, which makes it a crime to travel or attempt to travel for the purpose of committing terrorism offences outside Canada and by continuing to update the listing of terrorist entities under the Criminal Code to address the evolving terrorist challenge.

Additionally, our Government has recently announced the Protecting Canada from Terrorists Act which among other things, introduced amendments to the CSIS Act to ensure that CSIS has the tools it needs to investigate threats to the security of Canada.

Information about the Government of Canada's approach to Countering Terrorism can be found on the Public Safety Canada Web site at under National Security, Counter-Terrorism.
